In the heart of South Tyrol there is one of the biggest plateaus in all of Europe, the Rodenecker alpine meadow. Extending to an altitude of 2000m this combination of the Lüsner and Rodenecker alpine meadows makes for a charming excursion destination. Roam the lush, green alpine meadows and pastures, shaded forests with their characteristic spruces and larches and enjoy the fresh mountain air and view of the dolomites with every step you take.

One of the main attractions of this area is undoubtedly the Astjoch and the Joggele Stöckl which are at 2197m and likely to be raved about again and again. As you walk, you will definitely have occasion to stop in one of the many alpine lodges. The Roner lodge on the Rodenecker alpine meadow is especially worth a visit. A short break never hurts and then you’re off to your next attraction amongst the dolomites.

On the Rodenecker alpine meadow to Astjoch, 2194 m

The highest forest-free slopes on the mountain range

After a 5 hour walk you will be back at Astjoch from the Rodenecker alpine meadow. The Astjoch is the highest and least forested hills on the mountain range and is allow where the Rodenecker and Lüsner alpine meadows are found. You will gain about 470m altitude with this walk and should take time to enjoy the breath taking panoramic views from the hill. It starts from Zumis car park at about 1725m, follow the Alm road and then it’s a few hundred steps up the Confinweg. Continue through the forest and meadows, and then onto the Alm road for a short journey to the Roner lodge at 1832m. Walk a bit further to the snack bar, even further to marker 2 and follow that until you come to a road. Go past the Pianer cross until you reach the Starkenfeld lodge at 1936m. Carry on walking along the Alm road to marker to and climb the track on the left. The last leg of this journey is along steep tracks, keeping to the ridge until you reach your final destination of Astjoch.

Roner Lodge Rodenecker Alpine Meadow

An ever-popular destination is the Roner lodge at 1832m.It is located on the Rodenecker alpine meadow is surrounded by a stunning natural landscape. It’s not just passionate hikers and mountain bikers who come to the Roner lodge. Among their guests are families with children because it is a simple walk from Zumis car park. The children’s play area and sun terrace are two things which are waiting for you. From the car park at Zumis there is an easy 30 minute walk along a footpath for you and your companions.

Rastner Lodge Rodenecker Alpine Meadow

Rastnerhütte is at 1930m.Your walk will take you from the Zumis car park about 5.6km up to the Rodenecker alpine meadow (hike MK4). Alternatively it is also possible to travel to Rastner lodge by car in the summer. It is open from mid-May to mid-November and is sheltered from the snow in a hollow. So you will feel nothing more than a pleasant breeze during your hike. You can enjoy great views of the surrounding mountains from Rastnerhütte and from here can take on other hiking routes e.g. to Kreuzwiesenhütte (MK 2a), to Vintl (MK 14) or to Astjoch (MK 2).

From Würzjochstraße to Maurer Mountain, 2332 m

The Maurer Mountain lies between the Rodenecker alpine meadow in the south and Peitlerkofel in the north. It takes about 3 hours from Würzjoch to climb the 470m and reach your final destination at 2332m. Start your walk at the Geweihte Wasser car park (1869m). Next, follow the road to the footpath or rather marker 1 to the Maurer mountain lodge at 2127m. Above the lodge go westward to Alfreider Joch. Once there follow the markers in a northerly direction, or rather, to Maurer Mountain. Going back to the car park takes about 1.5 hours. Go back by the same route you came. If you’re planning a round trip then this works perfectly with this walk.

Fane Alpine Meadow – Wilde Kreuzspitze, 3132m

To the peak of Pfunderer mountain

From Fane alpine meadow you can reach Wilde Kreuzspitze, the main peak of Pfunderer mountain, within 6.5 hours. You climb about 1400m to reach this beautiful goal. Start your hike from the Fane alpine meadow car park. First follow the path up to the Fane alpine meadow at 1739m then past the Schramme gorge to marker 17 to the Brixener lodge at 2270m. Continue following marker 18/20 on the Rauhtalfernes moraines until you reach Rauhtaljoch at 2808m. Then follow the 18 marker to the East Ridge. Climbing tracks (and snow!) you will reach your final destination of Wilde Kreuzspitze. Then go back to Rauhtaljoch by the same route. From there follow marker 18 over snow and scree and then east from Wilde lake until you reach Seebach at 2532m. Then hike along the steep slopes on the western edge of the gorge. The next step is Labeseben alpine meadow. From there follow marker 18 to the eastern alpine meadow at 2138m. Just follow the track through the Schramme gorge. In the Gatterer lodge on the Fane alpine meadow you can reward yourself for your troubles. This is open in both summer and winter.

There a many different hiking trails leading up to the Rodenecker/Lüsner Alpine meadow. The low hills and numerous rest stops in this area provide families with the perfect opportunity for family hikes and enjoying the great outdoors. A rural idyll and unique panoramic views in close proximity to the dolomites provides a breath-taking experience for hikers in summer and cross-country skiers in winter. The route starts from the Zumis car park (up from Mühlbach over Nauders, alternatively the route up from Lüsen is also possible) from there, there is a wide dirt track or to the left there is a footpath (“Konfigweg”) through a forest and then an open pasture to the Roner lodge. The wide track goes towards the small Pianer church and a fork in the path towards the east, the left fork goes towards the Rastner lodge. From there, continue to the Starkenfeld lodge. It then heads back over the access road.

Guests of the ideally located Galtinerhof can experience the wonderful nature in the heart of South Tyrol first hand. Not only is there the possibility to hike up to Rodeneck but there are also beautiful hiking trails up into the mountains from the Lüsner Alpine meadow. For example, on the Lüsner alpine meadow the Kreuzwiesen alpine lodge welcomes hikers from May to early November. Drive through Lüsen to the car park above the hamlet of Flitt where you can find path number 2 of 10. This is where you begin your ascent. Walk up through the beautiful larch and spruce forest until you reach the alpine slopes. After a 4km walk and an ascent of about 600 metres you come to the Kreuzwiesen lodge at an altitude of 1,924m. Here, on the southern slopes of the Astjoches, enjoy the breath-taking views of the dolomites and the mighty Peitlerkopfel. Enjoy a snack here amongst the unique mountain scenery before heading back to the start. The Kreuzwiesen lodge is a popular base when crossing the Alps from Munich to Venice as well as for hikes on the Lüsner alpine meadow plateu with its beautiful meadows and fresh mountain air.
